Same scope as the read — the two families of respirators (air-purifying and atmosphere-supplying), the federal color-code system that tells you which cartridge stops which contaminant, the half-face / full-face / PAPR configurations and their assigned protection factors, the supplied-air rigs and SCBA that bypass the cartridge problem entirely, the short list of trigger conditions where supplied-air becomes the standard rather than an option, the fit-test procedure that verifies the seal, and the documented program (medical clearance, training, fit-test records, change-out scheduling, recordkeeping) that makes the equipment work. What’s in this deck

  • Setup & orientation — title, learning objectives, the field hook (tank-interior 2K urethane spray, two respirators on the workbench, one is the right answer)
  • The two families — air-purifying vs. atmosphere-supplying respirators. The fork at the top of every selection. The hard limits where APR is unsafe regardless of cartridge.
  • Cartridge and filter logic — federal color code (black for organic vapor, magenta for P100, white for acid gas, yellow for combination, plus less-common). N/R/P particulate-filter classes for oil resistance.
  • How cartridges fail — the breakthrough curve, end-of-service indicators, schedule-based change-out, why “smell it and change it” is not compliant.
  • APR configurations — half-face (APF 10), full-face (APF 50), PAPR (APF 25 to 1,000). When each is appropriate.
  • Supplied-air respirators (SAR) and SCBA — the two atmosphere-supplying configurations. Pressure-demand vs. continuous-flow. Why they bypass the cartridge problem.
  • The trigger conditions — IDLH, oxygen-deficient, spray-applied isocyanate, lead-removal above action level, in-tank, unknown atmosphere. Where supplied-air is the standard, not an option.
  • Fit testing — when required, qualitative test agents (isoamyl acetate, saccharin, Bitrex, irritant smoke), quantitative testing via condensation nuclei counter, the clean-shaven requirement at the seal.
  • The program — medical clearance, training, maintenance/cleaning/storage, recordkeeping. The structure that wraps the equipment.
  • The seven-step selection sequence — identify contaminant; identify family; estimate exposure; compare to decision points; apply trigger conditions; select protection-factor-appropriate class; confirm program currency.
  • Bookend — back to the manhole. The right answer for the in-tank 2K urethane.
  • Wrap — key takeaways, references, what’s next (fall protection)

Why we’re shipping the deck before the audio.
